UMG Attends Sail Training International Conference 2024 in Spain

On 22-23 November 2024, the Sail Training International Conference 2024 is taking place in A Coruña in Spain. Taking part in the conference from GMU are HM The Rector, Professor Adam Weintrit, the Director of the Ship Operations Department, Captain Dariusz Jellonnek, and the Captain of Dar Młodzieży, Captain Rafał Szymański.

During the two-day conference in northern Spain, delegates from around the world, including tall ship owners and operators, sail training providers, and representatives of the host port of the 2025 Tall Ships Races in A Coruña, will discuss subjects that are crucial to effective sail training, best practice at sea, and also focus on matters concerning the organisation of The Tall Ships Races in 2025.

As part of the seven sessions organised as part of this year’s conference, participants will take part in workshops for captains only on the rules, course strategy, and in-port engagement of their crews during The Tall Ships Races. Discussions will include safety and accidents during the events, and the expansion of environmental initiatives under the Blue Flag scheme.

The Conference will also provide a platform to address broadly understood issues related to the development and upbringing of young people through their participation in sail training, including empowering the youth through volunteering, as well as environmental considerations in the planning, construction, and operation of tall ships. The final session of the Conference will see participants reflect on who The Tall Ships races are aimed at today and look at practical ways to connect with under-represented groups in sail training.
