GMU Invention Awarded Property Rights

The Polish Patent Office has awarded Gdynia Maritime University industrial design registration rights for the solution “Hybrid cutting tool”. The solution's inventor is Dr Olga Łastowska, Assistant Professor in the Technology Fundamentals Department at the Faculty of Marine Engineering.

The proprietary solution enables the removal of internal weld excess inside pipes or cylindrical components using a method of cutting and burnishing after joining by butt welding. The new and original form of the industrial design is expressed through the shape, layout, and features of the lines, contours, and appearance - particularly its constituent elements - as well as its overall configuration. The tool is intended for installation in hydraulic devices without the need for specialised machinery, and the weld removal is performed in a single feed motion of the tool, by means of pressure from a hydraulic press. The tool is applicable wherever there are components requiring post-weld processing following butt welding, especially where a durable and robust construction is essential, such as in the shipbuilding, aerospace, defence, railway transport, and energy industries.

The new solution will be added to the portfolio of the University’s debut technology offering and will be promoted at the upcoming International Invention and Innovation Fair INTARG® 2025 in Katowice.

Congratulations!
