GMU Project Awarded International Science Centre Funding

Doctor Łukasz Janowski, a member of the scientific staff in the Department of Operational Oceanography at the GMU Maritime Institute, has been awarded financing for a project entitled "VILAMAP: A project for mapping the Vistula Lagoon: A high-resolution remote sensing approach for improved environmental and archaeological understanding," within the framework of the SONATA 20 call by the National Science Centre.

The call is aimed at individuals who gained a doctoral degree between 2 and 7 years before applying to the call and plan to carry out a research project.

The success rate of applications to SONATA 20 is only 17.6%.

The project will be the second one financed by the National Science Centre, in which Dr Łukasz Janowski will be the project leader.

The first project entitled "Pioneering exploration of Puck Bay based on high-resolution aerial and acoustic remote sensing," conducted from 2021 to 2025 as part of the SONATINA 5 programme, is now coming to a successful end.

The project "VILAMAP: A project for mapping the Vistula Lagoon. A high-resolution remote sensing approach for improved environmental and archaeological understanding," will create a highly detailed map of the bottom of the Vistula Lagoon. The project is a groundbreaking initiative, which will use advanced technology to map the seabed in murky waters on a large scale. Aerial, hydroacoustic (underwater), and satellite remote sensing techniques will be employed, combined with seabed sampling (collection of in-situ data from the bottom of the Vistula Lagoon) and machine learning algorithms for data analysis. All laboratory analyses will be performed to international standards by an experienced team of researchers from the GMU Maritime Institute. The project will create high-quality data sets which will be made available in publicly available databases, therefore benefiting other researchers and promoting further research.

Dr Łukasz Janowski was supported in his application by the Department of Science at GMU.
