Scholarly Evenings at GMU – 4 June 2025

On 4 June 2025, GMU will hold another lecture as part of its Scholarly Evenings with Gdynia Maritime University.

The topic of this week’s popular science lecture is “Ports as ‘Living Organisms’ – from Cranes to Artificial Intelligence”. The talk will be given by Dr Aleksandra Wawrzyńska, a graduate of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Marine Construction at Gdańsk Tech, who for more than 15 years has been connected in a professionbal capacity with Gdynia Maritime University.

Seaports are not merely places where ships arrive; they are complex and dynamic organisms where people, machines, and advanced technologies work together every day to ensure the smooth flow of goods on a global scale.

During the talk, Dr Aleksandra Wawrzyńska will explain how a port really operates – from its infrastructure and terminal operations to the intricacies of logistics and traffic management.

The speaker will offer insights into a typical day at a port – how a ship is serviced, how cargo is transferred ashore, and what must happen to ensure everything runs on time. She will also look to the future, exploring the concept of so-called autonomous ports, where most processes are carried out by robots, artificial intelligence, and automated systems.

Join us for a journey through a place that connects oceans with the world, humans with machines, and the past with the future – and where there is far more going on than first meets the eye.
