Offshore Companies

As an internationally recognised centre of research and higher education, Gdynia Maritime University has for many years engaged its intellectual and human resources in research and development, and implementation projects, particularly to the benefit of the maritime economy.

New strategies within the energy sector and energy and economic security of the country have led to new priorities and challenges within these areas, including for the University. Using its knowledge of systemic, technical, environmental, economic and organisational systems, Gdynia Maritime University supports the development of carbon-zero renewable energy technologies, including offshore wind energy. The University’s established position in the offshore wind energy market is primarily a result of the considerable experience of both the GMU Maritime Institute and the University’s four faculties in conducting research and maintaining business relations in connection with environmental research, geophysics, geology, and geotechnics for maritime investments, navigational and transport analysis, as well as providing opinions on installations and electrical devices, vessel movement at sea, inland navigation and development of the local port market.

In response to the country’s needs within the offshore wind energy sector, Gdynia Maritime University is currently building an innovative centre of integrated certified maritime environment research laboratories for the offshore industry. The Centre could prove to be the springboard for the creation of a “Polish Offshore Valley”. A key attribute of the Centre’s location is direct access to the Wisłoujście coast, which allows the University and its contractors to berth and carry out maintenance on research, training, and service ships. The GMU Centre for the Offshore Industry is part of the preparation and realisation of investments in offshore wind energy and a response to the needs of the innovative maritime industry. GMU is currently the only research and development unit in the country to carrying out such work.

With active participation in the energy sector in mind, the University began collaborating with major partners, intending to undertake R&D projects in renewable energy, monitoring, navigation, and safety and rescue of maritime transport within the areas of offshore wind farms. Other areas of collaboration are training and the creation of new study programmes.
